AKB48: ハート・エレキ

AKB48: ハート・エレキ

AKB48's new digital single is another winner for the insanely popular, super-sized girl group.

"Loving you," sings one of the many AKB48 girls at the very beginning of their new digital single, "ハート・エレキ," which Google translates as "Heart Electric." To that end, the song is populated by delightful electric guitars and very retro organ, along with vibrant drums and bass guitar. Musically, it's almost like The Doors doing J-Pop. Of course, the girls' voices sound nothing like Jim Morrison, but the guitars sound super '70's and the organ does, too. But I supposed it sounds more like an uppity '70's TV show theme song than The Doors, the more I think about it.

AKB48: KOISURU FORTUNE COOKIE (TYPE A)

AKB48: KOISURU FORTUNE COOKIE (TYPE A)

Your fortune cookie says disco, baby. At least that's the word of the day when it comes to describing ABK48's bouncy new throwback gem.

As you've probably noticed, I don't review every single that AKB48 or its associated groups release. There are just too many groups and releases to keep up with. Not only do you have all of the different groups, there are different teams of girls within the major groups as well as teams of trainees. It's hard for me to really even know which is which. For example, this is a review of their new single "恋するフォーチュンクッキー," pronounced "Koisuru Fortune Cookie" (Google translation: "Fortune Cookies In Love"), but I don't know which team actually sings on it.

AKB48: 永遠プレッシャー [EIEN PRESSURE] [TYPE A]

AKB48: 永遠プレッシャー [EIEN PRESSURE] [TYPE A]

AKB48 are back with another gem you won't be able to get out of your head. And one of the B-sides is a hot new Christmas song!

I feel like I should begin this review by proclaiming that AKB48 is back, but, seriously, do they ever go away? Nope. Never. They're like the cockroaches of J-pop. OK, I'm kidding about cockroaches, but you get the idea -- try and try as some of their detractors might like to keep them down, they just keep on coming back, fighting harder and harder, and conquering the J-pop charts. And, hey, if their fans love them and buy their records, that's all that matters.

AKB48: UZA (TYPE B)

AKB48: UZA (TYPE B)

AKB48's 28th single has arrived and it's mind-blowingly good.

"Just use your imagination," says a male voice during the 44 second or so synth-laden, infectious intro to AKB48's latest masterpiece. There's also a delightful, hard-driving dance pop beat with lighter electro-pop beats on top of it. Then, just before they begin singing the first verse, another voice exclaims "1,2,3!"

You know you're a certified pop group when you can unleash a single without even singing during the first minute or so. (OK, actually, they do sing the word "UZA" once during the intro, but that's it until they start singing the first verse.)

AKB48: 真夏の SOUNDS GOOD! [TYPE A]

By Paris365 on May 30, 2012

AKB48: 真夏の SOUNDS GOOD! [TYPE A]

AKB48 are continuing their tradition of releasing a bright, sunshiny song for summer with "真夏のSounds good!" [translation: "Summer Sounds Good!]. And, guess what? It does sound good! It's beach-ready, upbeat turbo pop. Nothing groundbreaking but if you're a mainstream J-pop aficionado then you're sure to find it irresistible. The B-side "3つの涙" [Google translation: "One Of Three Tears"] is actually even more infectious. It's faster, has a punchier beat and an even catchier melody. It could have easily been an A-side itself.
