RIHWA: BORDERLESS

Rihwa's first major label album has arrived and it's quite good.

A year and a half after releasing her first major label single, Rihwa has finally graced us with a full-length album. Was it worth the wait? Absolutely. But before we delve into that, a bit of Rihwa's info, courtesy of Generasia and Wiki: Rihwa was born in Sapporo, Japan. Following junior high, she went to Belleville, Ontario, Canada for high school. But then she returned to Japan after graduating in 2009, at which point she began releasing indie singles and, eventually, an independent album. After that, she moved to Tokyo and was signed to the major label Toys Factory in 2010.

RIHWA: 春風

RIHWA: 春風

Rihwa does a huge, epic, piano-based ballad. And it's wonderful. But what happened to the Rihwa who was a singer/songwriter playing songs on her guitar?

I couldn't find a romanized version of the title of this song. But Google translate informs me that it means "Spring Breeze," so let's just call it "Spring Breeze" instead of putting the actual title here when most of my readers can't read it.

I also failed to find a translation of the lyrics to this song, so about the only thing I can tell you about the lyrical content is that the title is "Spring Breeze," so it's probably about springtime.

RIHWA: LAST LOVE

RIHWA: LAST LOVE

Rihwa follows up her duet with Michelle Branch, "Good Love," with another English-language song

Acclaimed Japanese singer/songwriter Rihwa was last heard dueting with Michelle Branch on the English-language song "Good Love." Now she's back with another English-language song, "Last Love," this time going at it solo. And what a song it is. A huge, moving, epic ballad. Beautiful piano, elaborate strings, Rihwa's trademark acoustic guitar and lots of other instruments make for a very colorful and truly touching ballad, though it's Rihwa's emotive vocals that really make it shine.

RIHWA & MICHELLE BRANCH: GOOD LOVE

RIHWA & MICHELLE BRANCH: GOOD LOVE

Japanese singer/songwriter Rihwa teamed up with American singer/songwriter Michelle Branch for this lovely duet.

Japanese singer/songwriter Rihwa teamed up with American singer/songwriter Michelle Branch for this lovely duet, which Branch wrote after asking Rihwa if she'd be interested in collaborating, something Rihwa became extremely excited about, having become a fan of Michelle's music when she was attending school in Canada. The mid-tempo, guitar-centric track is entirely in English, but it was hardly Rihwa's first time singing in English, as she actually used to sing Michelle's "All You Wanted" in her vocal training class.

RIHWA: 約束 [YAKUSOKU]

RIHWA: 約束 [YAKUSOKU]

Rihwa's solid new single comes with a gorgeous ballad, a half-decent mid-tempo song and an interesting slice of punk rock (in English, no less)..

Rihwa's new single, "約束" ("Promise"), is a lovely ballad that begins with soft piano as she sings the first verse, gently-played guitar eventually joining the mix before it hits the chorus. Once it reaches that point, hushed drums, swooning strings and electric guitar begin. But, while the music is very endearing, it's Rihwa's beautiful voice and emotional performance that makes the song a truly emotive winner.

RIHWA: CHANGE

RIHWA: CHANGE

Japanese singer/songwriter Rihwa is actually from Canada, if I understand the Google translation of the product info. for this single correctly. That info. also credits Iizuka Keisuke, producer of the immensely popular girl group Perfume, for producing this single.

Rihwa's sound is pretty straight-forward: electric guitar, bass guitar, drums and keyboards. She's a classic singer/songwriter in that respect, writing and playing guitar on all of her songs.
