JM: Hello boys and girls! This review is brought to you by the tag-team of SentaiSeiya and Jmann!
SS:The first episode of Kyoryuger brings to the table what you would expect from the first episode of any other Super Sentai; it establishes the conflict and setting of the story. In Kyoryuger, the villains are the Deboss Army: a race of aliens who threaten to destroy the earth. In order to fight back, five youths are brought together to form a new team of superheroes.
SS: Armed with the power of the dinosaurs, which resides in the Dino Batteries (Judenchi), the five youngens are able to transform into the Kyoryuger, summon the power of the Judenryu, and command an arsenal of weapons.
SS: Much of the episode is spent setting up the background for the story and introducing the characters, as well as introducing the conflict between both sides of the story. Kyoryuger is notable because there is only one female character on the team. Furthermore, there is no yellow member at all. In an interview the Chief Producer for the show, he explained that Yellow was not used in this show because they wanted to portray the Kyoryuger as strongly as possible. This is why there is only one female member of the Kyoruger. Furthermore, Yellow was omitted from the team due to the fact that many of the recent Yellow Rangers have been female. So they felt that if one of the male characters were to play the role of Kyoryu Yellow, the character would be seen as too feminine. While that is the official explanation, I am going to have to call BS on it. My counter-point can be summed up in two words: Gao Yellow. He was both a male character and also the strongest on the team. I rest my case!
JM: Don't forget Hurricane Yellow! He was awesome!
SS: I am going to have to take your word on that one, since I have only watched an episode or two of Hurricanger. Nonetheless, a yellow Ranger would not necessarily equate weakness or femininity, if you look at recent Super Sentai shows.
SS: This leaves Amy Yuuzuki, Kyoryu Pink as the only female member of the team. But I suspect she is going to be a formidable fighter as there has been allusion to her strength in the show. Daigo Kiryu (Kyoryu Red) mentioned to the other members, whom he was not aware of being fellow Kyoruger, that Amy is in fact quite strong. Since Amy is pretty darn cute, it will be interesting to see if she can pull off the good looking/strong character combo.
SS: Most of the episode unfolds through the trials that Daigo faces in order to become Kyoryu Red. In the end, Daigo’s brave actions prove to Gabutyra that he is worthy of becoming a member of the Kyoryuger.
JM: He also proved that he is a pretty sweet dancer. SAMBAAAAA!
SS: That too.
SS: Speaking of musical part of this show, the songs are prety catchy, but obviously written for with a younger audience in mind. One thing that the show left me wondering was meaning of the word“vamola”, which is used in the intro of the show and in the show itself. It seems to be a made up Spanish word. Has japan grown tired of Engrish ? Is this the beginning of Spanishu?
JM: Shhhhhhh... Don't let them hear you. They have ears everywhere...
JM: Anyway, my only complaint right now is that their animal mentor bird guy, Torin, looked really cheap. I kept getting the feeling that they were cutting corners because they used up their budget with Go-Buster. That could just be me, and I could be totally wrong, but that was how I felt while watching it.
SS: I wish it was just your take on this character, but I also felt that he looked rather dated and cheap. With his long kunfu-master stache, he looks like a leftover character from Gekiranger. It's like Toei found a costume for a Gekiranger and decided to use it for this show. Now I do hope this character does turn out to be cooler than he is letting on, for the sake of the show's watchability. In general, I cannot stand animal-people in Super Sentai. Very few ever come off as real characters. That being said, Doggy Krugger( Dekaranger) and Shakin (Gekiranger) are awesome!
JM:Overall, I was absolutely pleased with this episode! Everything was so bright and colorful that it made my eyes bleed with happiness! The fight choreography was fantastic and it really made the show feel even more awesome than it already was! I'm a huge sucker for wire fighting. I can't wait for the next episode!
SS: It was a first episode all the way around. It is a definite departure from the daker tone of last year's show, Go-Busters. I too am excited for the next episode. I have high hopes for this show ability to create a kid-friendly Sentai that also appeals to the older fans.
