It’s no secret that I’m not the biggest fan of shonen shows. I often find them boring, generic, repetitive, unappealing, and in general just not fun to watch. Some of the bigger shows are really guilty of this for me. The only shonen I really like are the crazy ridiculous over the top shows like Toriko or Fist of the North Star, and that’s about it for me.
So I found it to be a bit of a surprise when I found that I really did enjoy Fairy Tail as much as I did.

Fairy Tail takes place in a land known as the Fiore Kingdom. A world where magic is a deep part of daily life, and wizards are a common sight. There are guilds that can be hired for work to help solve problems, kill monsters, and other miscellaneous tasks.

The main character of Fairy Tail is actually a girl named Lucy, who is an aspiring wizard who dreams of joining the infamous guild Fairy Tail. She soon quickly meets an energetic young man named Natsu and his cat companion Happy. After promptly destroying an entire town, Natsu reveals he’s a member of Fairy Tail and takes Lucy to join his guild.

I prefer my shonen to not be too serious, or incredibly over the top, sometimes both. In many ways I feel that Fairy Tail is able to do that pretty well. The show is always poking fun at itself by pointing out its flaws. There are some over the top characters that really help give the show a good light hearted feel. One character has a habit of stripping down naked subconsciously, and another wizard also has the ability to is dressed as a high school delinquent and solves his problems with his fists.

I’m pretty sure that isn’t how you’re supposed to use magic.

A lot of the early episodes of this show are pretty episodic, which is something I prefer in my shonen. Long drawn out episode arcs often bore me really quickly. In this first DVD set, the first major arc is covered and I have to say that I think it has a really good pacing. The fights aren’t really drawn out. Instead they all have a good pace about them and focus on moving the plot along. It really helps keep things fresh and interesting.

I was really surprised by how much I ended up enjoying Fairy Tail and I’m definitely going to keep checking it out. I just hope that it keeps up this good pace that the show started off with.
