Rosario+Vampire is a 2008 series by Gonzo, pronounced "Rosario to Vampire". Straight up, this is a STUPID show, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be enjoyable. Lots of sexual fanservice is present (but little to no actual nudity). Here are the major characters in this harem anime.
Tsukune Aono is a regular Japanese 15 year old. He’s sent to a high school called Yokai Academy. This would be fine, except all isn’t as it seems. It’s actually a school for monsters, and he’s the only human there. Tsukune starts off cowardly but slowly learns to deal with his unusual situation and friends.
Moka Akashiya is a vampire girl that uses Tsukune’s blood. “Outer” Moka is a sweet schoolgirl with bright pink hair. Once the cross on her chest is removed (only Tsukune can take it off), she shows her true darker side, “Inner” Moka, who shows up by a stock transformation scene.
Kurumu Kurono is a large-breasted succubus that tries to seduce Tsukune from Moka. Eventually they become friends, but there’s still that rivalry between the two girls.
Yukari Sendo is the token loli for the show. She’s a prodigy at Yokai Academy and a witch. She likes both Tsukune and the other girls. Although smart, she’s also childish and resents the fact she’s flat chested compared to the other girls.
Mizore Shirayuki is based on a Yukii Onna (snow fairy) from Japanese folklore. She’s the stalker with a crush type that uses ice abilities and ALWAYS has a lollypop in her mouth. Oddly, she's voiced by Rie Kugimiya despite not being a Tsundere archetype that Rie usually voices.
Ruby Tojo is another witch that plots to kill all humans at first, but then becomes friends with the others.
As you see, this is a ridiculously goofy harem anime that shouldn’t be taken too seriously. The production values are decent and the colors are bright and vibrant. Oddly enough, the majority of the animation in episode 10 was handled by Gainax, which showcases the most action in the first season. I spot checked the English dub. Some voices like Moka and Kurumu sound like their Japanese counterparts, but Yukari is WAY off as her voice isn’t nowhere as high pitched as the Japanese voice.
Overall I do enjoy this show. I saw the fansub (ooh dirty word there) back in 2008 so I knew what to expect, but rewatching it refreshed my memory. If you like harem comedies and don’t expect anything too intelligent, you’ll be fine.
