There are a few things that are certain in this world: death, taxes and Shin Chan’s ass. That’s what volume three part one delivers. There are jokes, there is crude humor, there is a wealth of pop culture jokes. But mostly, there is Shin Chan’s ass.

For those unfamiliar with Shin, he’s a little boy with a wicked sense of humor. A kindergartener with an uncouth and often awkward family, he blusters and struts his way through life, cracking wise about things he shouldn’t, at his age, understand and goofing up pop culture, big words and sayings. He is like the Cartman of Japan - if it’s wrong, it will come out of his mouth.

In the American version of the series, as produced by Funimation, Shin’s jokes and quips are fairly heavily re-written to be modern and Americanized. While some feel that Funimation alters the show too much, it is safe to say that the average anime fan won’t understand a lot of the in-jokes. In order to make it a show for fans who don’t fall into the obsessive-weeaboo-get-a-job category of anime fans, Funi makes it a little more ours. That’s not a bad thing, in my opinion; in fact, some of the funniest jokes come from the smart asses locked away in Funi’s Dallas HQ. Shin covers topics like Common, Obama and even “Glee” (someone is called ‘Cuter than that little gay kid on “Glee” ‘). Of course, for those who hit the anime to get their Japanese fix, the Funi team leaves the good Japanese jokes in tact. My personal favorite? Shin’s use of the phrase “Bowel’s Moving Castle.”

This set tackles such inane topics as porn stars at the beach, the socioeconomic structure of the pool, the sheer nightmare of taking Shin and company to the movies and all other manner of weirdness. This season also features episodes with titles like, “Vaginoplasty and a Stepladder.”

If you don’t want to shell out the clams for the DVD set, “Crayon Shin Chan” also airs for free on Hulu.com.
